Better Boy Tomato not only boasts a Guinness Book of World Records title for its astonishing yields (nearly 350 pounds of tomatoes from a single plant in a single season), but it also shines for reasons that extend far beyond its prolific production. This classic favorite stands out for its superior disease resistance, unmatched flavor, and its adaptability to a range of climates and conditions, making it the undisputed leader among beefsteak tomatoes.

For years, Better Boy Tomato has been the go-to choice for gardeners seeking hybrid-quality yields of succulent, juicy, yet meaty tomatoes, with each fruit weighing about a pound. It's an all-around performer that thrives in your garden, with foliage that protects against a host of threats including verticillium wilt, Fusarium wilt race 1, nematodes, Alternaria, and gray leaf spot. With Better Boy Tomatoes, gardeners can expect nothing less than the best.

These vibrant, rounded fruits kick off the growing season with vigor and keep the bountiful harvest going strong. The smallest fruits weigh in at about 10 ounces, with many growing much larger. Whether you're growing tomatoes successfully but also ensures a rewarding gardening experience. Trust in Better Boy to bring unparalleled quality to your garden year after year.

To achieve the best results, start your Better Boy Tomato seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant them outdoors once the threat of frost has passed and night temperatures stay reliably above 55°F. If an unexpected late frost threatens, safeguard your young plants with row covers. Space the plants 2 to 2½ feet apart to allow for optimal growth and air circulation.

Believe the Record 342 lbs per plant 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

Better Boy seedlings have a healthy bluish green colored foliage, and an extremely fast growing root system which seems to fill a larger pot within days. As the plants grow, the stems grow fast and need to be limited (pruned) and separated so each has its own air and light supply. I helped a plant yield over 100 lbs with no commercial fertilizer, just good, well rotted and balanced compost at planting time and some coffee grounds as the summer progressed. Watch a you tube video with the header Charles Wilbur for some tips from the champion world record grower who says Better Boy seeds are the best. Let 18 stems grow per plant, supported by concrete reinforcement mesh. Have fun growing some amazing 10' tall plants which yield oodles of medium sized, sweet and tangy fruits. It is not difficult to achieve with Better Boy.

ABSOLUTELY OUR BEST HYBRID EVER 0 people found this helpful

First time we grew BB in 2012 wasn't a good season for tomatoes. Spring of 2013 was way better and got a terrific constant supply of fruit. It is now the last week in December 2013 and have 10 BB fruit on the vine with a lot of new blossoms in spite of a frosty week a couple weeks ago. I only plant heirlooms but BB hybrid is a must in our garden EVERY year! Our Mortgage Lifter produces heavily alongside BB but BB is still alive and producing in December!

YEAR 2012 OK BUT YEAR 2013 BETTER 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Last year was a bad weather season for all my tomatoes. This spring has been better weather. I bought a sturdier larger Better Boy seedling and in LESS than 2 months it has outgrown Mortgage Lifter and already has lots of full-sized fruit waiting to turn pink when I like to pick them and ripen indoors on my counter. BB grows so fast I have to sucker and prune vines EVERY week or it will quickly take over the entire garden bed. It is greedy for space so it has to be trimmed often. I like heirloom tomatoes but BB is the only hybrid I use because its fruit is so pretty though average in taste IMO. Mortgage Lifter is still not showing any fruit whereas BB is loaded. I use OMRI organic tomato food and spray apple juice on the tomato blossoms to set and keep them from falling off.

Average Yield and Average Taste 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

Better Boy was planted from a purchased seedling. We had a lousy season--rainy sunless planting season, humid heatwave in growing season, and an early rainy harvest season. The heatwave halted most of our tomato fruit yield except for Mortgage Lifter and occasionally a fruit from Better Boy but as it got hotter, BB fruit got fewer and smaller fruit. Will try again next season with BB and mineralize and fertilize heavier.
