How to Grow Delphinium

Delphinium Germination Information

Delphinium Seed Germination How to Sow Delphinium:
  • Sow outdoors anytime in spring or summer, up to two months before first frost
  • Indoors, cover the seeds with four times their thickness in soil and maintain a temperature of 65-75° F during germination
  • Germinates in 10-20 days
  • Delphinium seeds are not long-lived and should not be stored
  • Some bloom the first year if started early enought, but most bloom the second year
  • When sowing seed outdoors, we recommend a maximum planting depth of 4X the width of the seed

How to Grow Delphinium:
Spacing:  Space 1-3 feet apart in full sun to partial shade

Soil: Plant in rich, loose, slightly alkaline soil

Additional Care: Keep the plants watered and fertilized. Delphinium grows best in a cool climate; taller varieties may require staking. Remove faded blooms to prevent seed formation

Appearance and Use:

Considered one of the best perennials. Delphinium is excellent for background planting, in borders, or for cutting. In early summer, tall 1- to 5- foot stalks display 3- inch, single or double blooms of white, light blue to purple and pink to mauve. Plants reach 12-18 inches wide and sometimes rebloom in fall
