Mesclun Seed Germination How to Sow Mesclun:
  • Best sown outdoors in situ after all danger of frost is past in the spring (or in late summer) and when the soil is warm
  • Successive sowings are the key to a season-long harvest; sow each week for a daily bounty
  • Seeds can also be sown indoors at a temperature of 68-70°, but this is not the most practical method
  • Indoors and out, sow at a depth of 4 times the size of the seeds
  • Expect germination in 7-10 days
  • When sowing seed outdoors, we recommend a maximum planting depth of 4X the width of the seed

How to Grow Mesclun:
Transplanting: If sown indoors, transplant outdoors when there are at least two sets of true leaves

Spacing: Space or thin seedlings 1-2 inches apart

Lighting: Site in full sun to light shade

Soil: Site in a slightly acid to neutral, moist, well-drained soil. Fertilize prior to planting and top dress throughout the growing season

Temperature: These plants prefer cool, mild weather; when growing mesclun in hot weather, plant in an area that is shaded from the hot afternoon sun

Additional Care: As plants vigorously spread underground via runners, plant them in submerged containers or in areas bordered by walkways or edging. Pinch to encourage branching and sheer plants after flowering to prevent seed formation. For indoor culture, it is best to start new plants from seed rather than potting up clumps from the garden

Appearance and Use:

Mesclun means “mixed” in French and denotes mixes of salad greens that are harvested when very young and tender. Mixes are comprised of Chervil, Mâche, Mustard, Purslane, and Red Orach just to name a few of the possible components. Leaf sizes, textures, colors, and flavors vary with the components and all contribute to make an interesting salad. Harvest all types when the leaves are at their most tender: at just 2-3 inches long. Cut the outermost leaves while keeping the growing point intact or cut the entire plant at once. Do so early in the morning before the leaves wilt in the heat of the day
