This highbush blueberry cultivar is valued not only for fruit production but also for ornamental purposes. Vaccinium Cabernet Splash™ is an upright shrub that grows up to 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. A mid-season variety, Cabernet Splash Blueberry blooms in small, bell-shaped white flowers in mid-spring followed by abundant clusters of sweet, juicy, medium-sized blueberries that ripen early to mid-July. The bush attracts birds and butterflies and makes a good companion for azaleas and rhododendrons.
The deep, dark cabernet spring foliage on this deciduous shrub turns attractive shades of mottled cabernet and green as it matures. Cabernet Splash Blueberry is cold hardy and low maintenance, but the shallow, fibrous roots need constant moisture and good drainage. Full sun, acid soil, and consistent fertilizer will produce the best fruiting and color.
Blueberries are self-pollinating but planting two or more varieties with similar bloom times encourages cross-pollination, producing larger yields of larger berries. Planting early, mid-season, and late-fruiting varieties extends the blueberry season from early June to the end of the summer.
